How to work out the area of a room

  1. Measure the length and width. Measure each wall to wall. For an L-shaped room, split it into two rectangles and add both.
  2. Pick your units. Metres, centimetres, feet or inches. Results always show in both m² and ft².
  3. Add extra for cutting. For flooring or tiles, add about 10% so you have enough after cuts.
  4. See the cost. Type the price per square metre to see the total.

Questions people ask

Multiply the length by the width, both in metres. A room 4 m long and 3 m wide is 4 × 3 = 12 m².

How many square feet are in a square metre?

1 m² is about 10.764 ft². To go from ft² to m², divide by 10.764.

How do I work out the area of a circle?

Choose Circle and enter the diameter. Area is π × radius², where the radius is half the diameter.

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Usually 5–10% for straight laying and 10–15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns.

Can I measure in feet and get square metres?

Yes. Pick Feet, and the result shows square metres and square feet.
