Questions people ask
How is BMI calculated?
Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. 70 kg and 1.75 m gives 70 ÷ 1.75² = 22.9.
What do the BMI ranges mean for adults?
Under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy, 25 to 29.9 overweight and 30 or more obese. Some groups, including people of Asian, Black African or Caribbean background, may have higher health risks at a lower BMI.
Does BMI work for everyone?
No. It doesn't measure body fat directly and isn't suitable for children, pregnancy or very muscular people. Talk to a GP or doctor about your health.
