How to add or remove VAT
- Type the amount. The price before VAT to add it, or the total including VAT to take it off.
- Choose add or remove. Add VAT gives the total to charge. Remove VAT finds the price before VAT.
- Pick the rate. 20% is the UK standard rate, 5% the reduced rate. Choose Other for any rate.

How do I add 20% VAT?
Multiply the price by 1.2. £100 + 20% VAT = £120.
How do I remove 20% VAT from a price?
Divide by 1.2. £120 including VAT is £100 before VAT, so the VAT is £20. Don't just take 20% off: that gives the wrong answer.
What are the UK VAT rates?
20% standard, 5% reduced (for example home energy and children's car seats) and 0% zero rate (most food and children's clothes). Check GOV.UK for current rates.
Does it work for other countries?
