About this tool

This free break-even calculator works out the break-even point in units and in sales for a product, café, shop or online business, and how many sales you need to reach a target profit.

How to work out your break-even point

  1. Add your fixed costs. Costs that stay the same however much you sell, like rent, wages and subscriptions.
  2. Add price and cost per sale. What a customer pays, and what each sale costs you (materials, card fees, delivery).
  3. See your break-even point. The number of sales where income equals costs. Every sale after that is profit.

Questions people ask

What is the break-even formula?

Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (price − cost per sale). The bit in brackets is the contribution per sale.

What if my cost per sale is higher than my price?

Then you lose money on every sale and can never break even. Raise the price or cut the cost.

How can I break even sooner?

Lower fixed costs, raise prices, or reduce the cost of each sale.
