About this tool

This free gas bill calculator converts gas meter readings into kWh and cost, using the same formula suppliers use. It works for metric meters (cubic metres), older imperial meters (hundreds of cubic feet) and US therms.

How to work out your gas bill

  1. Read your meter. Write down the numbers before the red digits or decimal point. Take two readings, a few weeks apart.
  2. Choose your meter type. Metric meters show m³; older imperial meters show ft³. US bills use therms.
  3. Add your prices. The unit rate and standing charge are on your bill.

Questions people ask

How do I convert gas units to kWh?

For a metric meter: units × 1.02264 × calorific value ÷ 3.6. For an imperial meter, first multiply by 2.83 to turn hundreds of cubic feet into cubic metres.

What is the calorific value?

How much energy is in the gas, usually about 39–40 MJ/m³. It's printed on your bill.

How do I know if my meter is metric or imperial?

A metric meter says m³ on it; an imperial one says ft³ or 'cubic feet'.
