About this tool

This free electricity cost calculator works out appliance running costs from watts and hours, and checks your electricity bill from meter readings, the price per kWh and the daily standing charge.

How to work out electricity costs

  1. Find the power. It's on the appliance's label or in its manual, in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). 1 kW = 1,000 W.
  2. Enter your price per kWh. It's on your electricity bill or in your account, often called the unit rate.
  3. See the cost. Per hour, day, week, month and year. For a bill check, use your meter readings instead.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate electricity cost?

kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1,000. Cost = kWh × price per kWh. A 2,000 W heater for 3 hours uses 6 kWh; at 0.25 per kWh that's 1.50.

What is a standing charge?

A fixed daily charge for being connected, paid even if you use no electricity.

What's a typical price per kWh?

It changes often and differs by supplier and country. Use the unit rate on your latest bill for an accurate answer.
