About this tool
This free GPA calculator works out your grade point average on the standard 4.0 scale used by US high schools and colleges. Use it as a weighted GPA calculator for Honors and AP classes, or add your previous GPA to calculate your cumulative GPA.
How to calculate your GPA
- Add your classes. Pick each grade and enter its credit hours (often 3 or 4 in college, 1 in high school).
- Mark Honors or AP. For a weighted GPA, Honors adds 0.5 and AP or IB adds 1.0 to that class's points.
- Add your current GPA (optional). Enter your GPA and credits so far to see your new cumulative GPA.
Questions people ask
How is GPA calculated?
Each grade has points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on). Multiply each by the class's credits, add them up, and divide by the total credits.
What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses the 4.0 scale for every class. Weighted GPA gives extra points for harder classes like Honors and AP, so it can go above 4.0.
What is a good GPA?
3.0 is a B average. Many competitive colleges look for 3.5 or higher.
Do schools use the same scale?
Most US schools use this scale, but some differ, for example A+ worth 4.0 or 4.3. Check your school's handbook.
